Western Walnut

Our walnut is sourced from multiple locations throughout the Pacific Northwest, primarily the Willamette Valley. High levels of naturally-occurring glacial sediment (glacial till) throughout this region influence the grain pattern and color variation of the wood. The unique nature of subspecies and hybrids in the Pacific Northwest also contributes to these variations, sometimes casting hues of grey, purple, or red. Part of the genus Juglans (J.), our walnut is not from a single source, but rather multiple native strains.

J. nigra – commonly known as American Black Walnut, is primarily native to the Midwest and east-central United States. It was brought to the west coast by early settlers. J. hindsii  a native species of northern California – found its place in Oregon’s Willamette Valley in the mid-1800′s. Settlers who came to this region began growing this species for its timber and food source (you guessed it…walnuts!). It is commonly referred to as Oregon black walnut, Claro walnut, and Northern California walnut. J. californica, which is native to California, is commonly referred to as California black walnut, Southern California black walnut, and California walnut. Bastogne walnut – also known as Paradox walnut – is a rare hybrid between California english walnut (J. californica) and Claro walnut (J. hindsii) that is found in Northern California.
