White Oak
White Oak is one of the most biologically successful hardwoods in North America. A symbol of strength and steadfastness, White Oak possesses a stunningly light grain, giving it a bright and wholesome character. White Oak is incredibly durable due to its tight-knit grain, and has been used historically for a wide range of applications including railroad sleepers, fences, baskets, agricultural tools, carts and coaches, shipbuilding, flooring, millwork, and of course furniture.
At Chadhaus, we use a variety of White Oak species, including Quercus alba (eastern North American White Oak) and Quercus garryana (Oregon White Oak). Our woods are primarily quarter- or rift-sawn, ensuring the most stable furniture possible. How a board is cut from the log is directly related to its appearance and behavior when used in furniture. Quarter-sawn wood exposes the natural internal rays of the tree, which are particularly beautiful in white oak. This type of cut is extremely durable, as the annual rings are laid across the end grain of the boards, allowing for less expansion and contraction of the wood.
We offer both natural and whitewash finishes on our oak furniture. For an example of natural oak, see our Hanko Bed and Hanko Side Table.
